The Guzheng is one of the most representative and widely played traditional Chinese plucked string instruments. It has a broad range and a clear, bright, lyrical, and rich tone. Its multiple parallel strings allow it to perform both delicate, flowing melodies and dramatic changes in tone and pitch through techniques such as Tremolo, Glissando, and a wide range of string-bending and vibrato techniques. From quiet and graceful passages to powerful and intense performances, the Guzheng offers a broad expressive range and is one of the most distinctive sounds in traditional Chinese music.
